Arsenal will not be able to get to defend their title any further ir win their 15th FA Cup this year courtesy of a Gabriel own goal.
The game today proved that matches aren’t played on paper because Arsenal -the team that was largely tipped to win- was lethargic and lost the game.
Southampton dominated for most of the game even though they saw less of the ball due to the fact that they were more effective with the ball.
They unfortunately got undone by their own defender in the 24th minute when Gabriel scored an own goal.
As if the Gabriel own goal was not enoug to Arsenal fans it is worth noting that the cross that cause the own goal was from a former Spurs player Walker-Peters.
One of Southampton’s chances came in the 50th minute after Forster’s pass found Ings whose chance came off the upright. This chance caused a scare when it came off Leno’s back and almost sneaked in to goal.
Nketiah came close to earning an equaliser in the 67t minute when he got into space but his toe poke was deflected by Stephens and tipped away for a corner by the Saint’s goalie.
This elimination means Arsenal needs to win the Europa league or finish in the top 7 places in order to play European football.
